Cool TV: NCAA Edition

It's been a while since I've written about the Over The Air (OTA) television scene, and tonight that's what's on my mind.

Coming soon to a station near you is the new network called The Cool TV.  This is a music channel that's supposed to be geared toward local music for each region.  In my area, The Cool TV will be broadcast in Greensboro, NC, on channel 48-2 on a new WMYV subchannel.  In Asheville, NC, I believe it will broadcast on 13-3, replacing WLOS's redundant standard-def channel.  It's also coming to Raleigh, but I'm not sure which channel.  All this is said to happen around April 1, but these dates always have a tendency to move around quite a bit.

Also on the horizon is a new translator coming to China Grove, NC.  If you're in the Salisbury, Lexington, Thomasville, Mocksville area and have always wished you could tune into WSOC channel 9, the ABC affiliate in Charlotte, you day may soon come in mid April.  This channel will broadcast on ch36, but you're TV will display it as 9-7 and as 64-7.  That's right!  You get two for the price of one!  Channel 9 is ABC, but channel 64 is an independent channel that seems to show a lot of Oprah and Dr. Phil if you're into that kind of thing.

Until this past Monday, WGHP ch8 in High Point had been broadcasting on two different channels:  ch8 and ch35.  Both would show up on your TV as ch8, and you probably wouldn't know the difference.  But now they've shut off the ch8 transmitter because many people weren't able to pick it up.  Why is this good news?  Because now I have a chance of tuning in WOLO ch25, the ABC affiliate in Columbia, SC.  They broadcast on digital ch8, and until now I've been shielded by WGHP's ch8.  Now, as soon as the weather cooperates, I should be able to add another station to my list.

Finally, with the NCAA Tournament less than a week away, we're going to want access to as many games as possible.  But, there's no reason to pay high dollar for cable or satellite access.  For the past several years, WFMY ch2 in Greensboro has opened up an extra subchannel to show an out-of-region game.  You can watch the main game in hi-def on 2-1, or switch to 2-3 for a different game.  You might have to rescan to pick up 2-3.  And, if you're really lucky, you may be able to watch different games on different CBS stations.  I'm able to watch CBS out of Greensboro, Charlotte, or Greenville SC, so there's a decent chance that I'll get a choice of at least one extra game.  Now that's Cool TV.

It really is helpful to have blogs like this where we are given helpful tips about the new channels being launched and how we can advantage of the different channels! With all the details it will be easy for “green-horns” to keep abreast of what is being said! And with the NCAA Tournament it is great that we will be able to watch that extra game without it making a hole in our pockets!! Keep up the good work - it's truly appreciated!
