Bond - Part 5, The Final Chapter

When James Bond had distanced himself from the lake and had advanced 100 yards into the woods, he stopped. Had he heard something? Yes, he heard a faint thumping sound coming from up ahead. He carried no weapon, but gripped his walking stick with an added sense of purpose as he continued forward. Walking deeper into the woods the sounds grew louder. Were there screams mixed in with the thumping? Yes, Bond had distinctly heard someone shouting for help. He quickened his pace.

As the voices grew louder, Bond saw a small clearing ahead among the trees. It was an area where the brush and leaves had been pulled aside, and in the center was a wooden panel. It was a door with a small latch that was being kept locked by only a small twig. Unsure what he would find inside, he removed the twig and swung the door wide open. As Bond took a step back, he saw several men’s faces looking upward at him, shielding their eyes from the brightness. After a moment, as the prisoners’ eyes became adjusted to the light, they each removed their hands from in front of their faces. One man said, “Thank you, sir. We thought we’d never get out of here.” The man had a Scottish accent.  Another man said, “We’ve been trapped in here since yesterday.” This man Bond identified as having an Australian accent. Others lent their appreciation for being rescued, and Bond clearly recognized them as being British.

Bond extended his hand and pulled each one out of the pit until they were all standing along side him. It was then that he realized he knew these men. Bond exclaimed, “Well if it isn’t Sean. And Roger! And Timothy! And, by George, if it isn’t George Lazenby! Good to see you Pierce, ol’ buddy! And, there’s the youngster in the pack; how are you, Daniel Craig?”

Daniel replied, “Much better now, sir. How did you ever find us?”

Bond responded, “Never mind that, how did you all end up in there?”

Sean Connery, the leader of the crew, spoke up, “Ah, they got us when we were least expecting it. Some lowly operative of SPECTRE snuck up behind each of us, one by one, and covered our mouth and nose with a handkerchief soaked in a sleeping agent. He then dragged each of us into this pit. We never saw him coming. I guess our egos got in the way, and we let our guard down.”

James Bond – that is, the REAL James Bond from Ian Fleming’s novels –considered this for a moment and then said matter of factly, “I guess that just goes to show you chaps that the movie will never be quite as good as the book.”
