Helen
I watched the President’s press conference on Monday. Well, actually,
it was on my TV, but the volume was muted while I tried to play the
guitar. Eventually I quit playing and turned the volume up, and it was
about that time that I saw Helen Thomas get to ask her question about
Pakistan. It’s been a while since I’ve watched a press conference –
mainly because it’s not usually broadcast live in primetime – and I
hadn’t seen long-time reporter Helen Thomas lately. She looked really
old and I was curious just how old she was, so I did what any curious
person would do: I Wikipedia-ed her. It turns out that she was born in
1920 and will turn 89 years old later this year. I read further down
the page and in less than two minutes after she asked her question, her
wikipedia page had been updated to include the question she had just
finished asking! I knew wikipedia pages could change quickly, but I had
never witnessed it for myself. Anyway, poor Helen didn’t seem satisfied
with Obama’s answer, and when she tried to ask her follow-up question,
her microphone was taken away. But, hey, at least she got a seat in the
front row. I read that Bush had her standing all the way in the back of
room!
