Happy Meals
While I was chomping down on my Big Mac today, I got to thinking about
something. Is it legal for fast food restaurants to offer a low cost
“Senior Coffee”? I know McDonalds and others used to offer 25 cent
coffee or soft drinks to seniors, and I guess they still do. Isn’t that
age discrimination? I’m not a coffee drinker; I’m not a senior; and I
don’t really care whether they offer it or not. But I’m wondering how
they can legally offer the same product to people at different costs
based solely on age. Now, some places offer lower prices for kids (like
the kids’ buffet), but that’s justified by saying that a 6 year old
doesn’t eat as much as an adult. Maybe once people turn 65 they don’t
drink as much coffee?! I wonder if anyone has ever sued over this. I
mean, people sue for anything. If somebody sued (and won, I think) for
being served hot coffee, then this age discrimination thing should be a
slam dunk.
In a related story, my meal cost $5.11 and I paid with a ten dollar bill and 11 cents in change. The cashier didn’t see the dime I had given him so he gave me $4.90 back as change, defeating the whole purpose of me paying with exact change so I wouldn’t get a pocket full of coins and a wad of bills. Oh, well, no big deal. But, as chance would have it, somebody this afternoon asked if I had change for a five and because of my earlier experience I was prepared to help him out. How serendipitous!
