The Z-Coil

I've started seeing these commercials on TV for Z-Coil Footwear. The first time I saw it I thought it was a spoof, something like you’d see on Saturday Night Live, but it’s for real. These are special tennis shoes with a 1” tall spring mounted to the heal “for added comfort”. It looks like a high heel tennis shoe except the heel is a color-coordinated coil spring. They took the phrase “put a spring in your step” way too literally. This reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Jimmy gave Kramer these special shoes that are supposed to make him jump higher while playing basketball. Kramer was wearing these shoes after having dental work done and his mouth was still numb. Add to that his naturally goofy nature and his unkempt hair, and he had Mel Torme convinced that he was mentally challenged. That brings me to my long-held theory that everything in life relates to an episode of Seinfeld. They covered a lot of ground in that show, and today the Z-Coil has its roots from the episode “The Jimmy” from about 15 years ago.
